It was located north of Cape Henry at the entrance to Cape Henry Channel. A cruise ship struck the buoy and may have dragged it north until it sank or came free from the ship. The Bay Hydro II was tasked to survey the York Spit Channel from G"37" & R"38" gate down to R"20" and then down to north of Cape Henry to help assist in clearing the precautionary area . The survey limits and methods (i.e., sensors used) were determined by the OIC of the Bay Hydro II in consult with the NRB Chief and NOAA Navigation Manager. The data from this survey are not intended to meet NOAA charting specifications, and are not intended to be applied to the nautical chart with the exception of hazards to navigation (i.e., DToNs), and potential anti-DToNs subject to branch review.</ns1:memoPurpose><ns1:products productSubmitted="true"><ns1:discussion>The field unit produced a survey outline, bathymetric grid, and associated SSS mosaics. The team confirmed with local authorities that the buoy was known to be absent from the charted station.

The multibeam surfaces show major heave and roll artifacts, due to poor weather conditions. These artifacts are more egregious in the MBES data east of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. The hydrographer post-processed SBETs in an attempt to alleviate these artifacts, but was unsuccessful in doing so.</ns1:resultsAndRecommendations><ns1:approval><ns1:adequacy>This survey does not meet charting specifications and is not adequate to supersede prior data.</ns1:adequacy></ns1:approval></ns1:memoBody><ns1:metadataTable><ns2:number>S-E924-BH2-17</ns2:number><ns2:registryNumber>D00240</ns2:registryNumber><ns2:stateOrTerritory>Virginia</ns2:stateOrTerritory><ns2:generalLocality>Southern Chesapeake Bay</ns2:generalLocality><ns2:sublocality>York Spit Channel</ns2:sublocality><ns2:scale>10000</ns2:scale><ns2:equipmentTypes><ns2:manufacturer>Edgetech</ns2:manufacturer><ns2:model>4200</ns2:model><ns2:type>Side Scan Sonar</ns2:type></ns2:equipmentTypes><ns2:equipmentTypes><ns2:manufacturer>Kongsberg</ns2:manufacturer><ns2:model>EM2040</ns2:model><ns2:type>Multibeam Sonar</ns2:type></ns2:equipmentTypes><ns2:horizontalDatum>North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83)</ns2:horizontalDatum><ns2:verticalDatum>Mean Lower Low Water</ns2:verticalDatum><ns2:verticalDatumCorrection><ns2:methodsUsed>VDatum</ns2:methodsUsed></ns2:verticalDatumCorrection><ns2:projection>UTM Zone 18N</ns2:projection><ns2:fieldUnit>NOAA R/V BAY HYDRO II</ns2:fieldUnit><ns2:datesOfSurvey><ns2:start>2017-10-05</ns2:start><ns2:end>2017-10-05</ns2:end></ns2:datesOfSurvey><ns2:chiefOfParty>LTJG Sarah L.
