<drm:memoPurpose>The primary objectives of the FACE 07 (Florida Area Coastal Environment) Cruise are to 1) locate and characterize the chemical and physical oceanographic characteristics of Gulf Stream eddies and their effect on coastal ecosystems; 2) obtain samples for 15N and 13C studies of anthropogenic effects on coastal waters; 3) obtain high-resolution bathymetry data on specific problem areas off S. Florida; and 4) characterize the boil and plume, and ambient currents from the six treated-water ocean outfalls off of southeastern Florida using advanced instrumentation. The ocean outfalls include Delray Beach, Boca Raton, Hollywood, Broward, Miami North, and Miami Central.

The FACE program is a multi-year partnership of NOAA/AOML and other federal agencies, state and county ecosystem management agencies, county governments, municipal water and sewer authorities, and public environmentally concerned citizen groups. The FACE project originated as a NOAA response to the needs of government agencies and water and sewer authorities in south Florida that were challenged by ecosystem management problems. These groups are interested in NOAA’s capabilities that might assist them in ecosystem management problems. The science effort for the cruise represents interests from a wide range of interested parties from NOAA, the University of Miami, and various state and water-treatment organizations.</drm:memoPurpose>
