This data set is part of a larger set of data called the MultiBeam Bathymetric Data Base (MBBDB) where other similar data can be found at http://map.ngdc.noaa.gov/website/mgg/multibeam/
</abstract>
<purpose>The intent of these data is to make high-resolution bathymetry available to the public for a wide variety of uses such as research and earth science analysis. These data are not intended to be used for navigation. Nautical charts produced and certified by NOAA should be used for navigational purposes. For more information on NOAAs nautical charts, go to NOAAs Office of Coast Survey website at: http://chartmaker.ncd.noaa.gov.

<logic>These data were produced using Level 1 data files exported from CARIS HIPS at a cell size resolution appropriate to density of the data. The file was then tested by bringing in to the IVS Flederamus Ver 6 to ensure that geospatial information is not corrupted.
</logic>
<complete>The Geotiff image is sourced from a gridded dataset. The original full-resolution multibeam data (Level 1 data) were used to create a downsampled uniform-resolution surface grid with a best depth component in “IVS Average Gridder”. The downsampled grid nodes from that depth surface were then exported and used to generate the shaded relief DTM in IVS Fledermaus which were then used to create IVS SD objects, Geotiff files and XYZ gridded data. The data are believed to be complete in accordance with the ship’s Multibeam data acquisition and processing logs.

<procdesc>The bathymetry data were generated using a Kongsberg EM302 multibeam system, and recorded using Kongsberg's Seafloor Information System (SIS) software as *.all files. Collocated to the bathymetric data, bottom backscatter data were collected stored within *.all files, both as beam averaged backscatter values, and as full time series values within each beam. Realtime corrections to the data include:(1) Continuous application of surface sound speed obtained with a hull-mounted SBE 45 thermosalinograph, (2) Application of sound speed profiles obtained with Sippican Deep Blue Expendable Bathythermographs (XBTs) and / or Seabird CTD 9/11, (3) Application of roll, pitch, and heave motion corrections obtained with POS M/V V.4 motion sensor unit. Each raw multibeam file was imported into CARIS HIPS and SIPS 6.1. Each file was individually cleaned of errant navigation and depth values using CARIS's Swath Editor. The files were then added to a cumulative Base Surface within CARIS, and further cleaned of errant depth values using CARIS's Subset Editor. Motion corrector values from POS M/V V. 4 applied in real-time were verified in CARIS's Attitude and Navigation editors. For depths deeper than 500 m, no tidal corrections were applied. The Base Surface was then exported to an ASCII XYZ file using the CARIS Export Base Surface to ASCII function. The format of the exported ASCII XYZ files is: latitude, longitude (WGS84), depth (meters), space delimited. The naming convention of the ASCII export is < cruise ID or survey sub-area ID>_<datum info: geographic or projected>_<cell size in meters>. This file format was selected for its ability to be imported by a multitude of geographic programs. An optimal grid cell size was selected based on available sounding density and beam foot print size, as a function of depth and system mode.
