Abstract:: This report contains multibeam bathymetry, acoustic-backscatter, CTD/XBT and GPS archived files of data collected on the maiden research cruise of the Puerto Rico Trench; this cruise involved the U.S.Geological Survey (USGS) 02051 and the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) RB0208 (i.e. Leg I of III) between 24 September and 30 September 2002; over an area of about 25,000 square kilometers. These data were collected in an area roughly 25,000 square kilometers in size using SeaBeam 2112 (12 kHz) system mounted on the hull of the NOAA ship Ronald H. Brown. Onboard tests have established the spatial resolution of the multibeam bathymetry and backscatter imagery at water depth between 100m -150m, and 30m, respectively. The vertical resolution could not be established independently from the data, but is thought to be about 0.5% of the water depth. Included on this Open-file Report are geometric data (shapefiles/shp)for modeling , formal metadata, and re-projected imagery (i.e. Geographic Coordinate System in Decimal Degrees). This data has been provided with an option to emulate the trench in 3D for better perspective views.
Purpose:: These data and information are intended for government agencies, science researchers, students from elementary through college, policy makers, and the general public; copies of this data set will be stored, maintained, and updated at the USGS Woods Hole Science Center's Information Archives and other USGS facilities.
