Northern Mariana Islands Mariana Trench Central IVS3D SD Acoustic Backscatter data from Mariana Trench 2010 mapping.
Gridded (100 m/pixel) full coverage, processed Acoustic Backscatter Data of the western insular margins of the Northern Mariana Islands and Guam. Data were first reduced for position, elevation, orientation, water-column sound-speed and refraction effects and are provided as a cleaned gridded Acoustic Backscatter IVS3D SD dataset. All soundings and ancillary raw and reduced data were provided with quality flags, indicating whether these data were rejected or deemed to be outside deliverable survey specifications.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), on behalf of the United States Government, has a requirement to carry out mapping surveys of specific regions on the margins surrounding the Guam and Commonwealth of the Mariana Islands region of the western Pacific Ocean in order to determine the detailed bathymetry of the margins. The data are required to support any potential claim for extended jurisdiction by the United States under United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) Article 76. The requirement is for the collection and processing of full-coverage multibeam sonar data in water depths of approximately 1000 to 11,000 m in order to precisely define the location of potential natural prolongations to the island arc as defined under UNCLOS Article 76. As part of their NOAA-funded research program, University of New Hampshire (UNH) researchers oversaw data acquisition, processing and archiving of the data collected during the cruise.

All soundings are within 0.5% of water depth, based on cross-line checks. Positions were determined by corrected differential GPS-aided inertial navigation. Sound-speed profiles were calculated from numerous XBT casts calibrated to an CTD cast during a patch test performed immediately prior to data collection.

Horizontal positioning of the vessel was determined using Differential-aided DGPS integrated into a POS/MV model 320 version 4 system. Positioning is accurate to better than 0.5 meters (at 95% confidence) during all surveying. All positioning is referenced to the WGS84 Datum.
+-0.5% of water depth.
Individual soundings data were edited for fliers and then merged with navigation using University of New Brunswick Ocean Mapping Group SwathEd software.
